Why Take the ACT?

History of the ACT

American College Testing (ACT) exams were first administered in 1959, and grew in popularity over the following decades as a meter-stick for college admissions and scholarships.

As you may have seen in the news, the COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented challenges on the standardized test industry. With in-person testing impossible, many schools went “test-optional” for the fall 2020 application season.

Three years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1,800 American colleges chose to hang on to the “test optional” policy (fairtest.org). When applying to these schools, students have their choice of whether or not to send standardized test scores. 3.7% of schools have gone “test blind,” meaning ACT scores are not considered in the admissions process (gettingatthecore.com).

Why Your Student Should Take The ACT

Since it’s possible to get into some colleges without a standardized test score, you might be wondering, why would your student choose to take the ACT?

  • A great ACT score can help an application when a student has an average/below average GPA

  • Even test-optional colleges may still require a certain ACT score for merit scholarships

  • Colleges may use ACT scores for course placement
