Fourth Grade Math Tutoring

Fourth grade is an exciting year of mathematical exploration and growth in Grade 4! This year, students begin to delve deeper into complex concepts, encouraging students to think critically and creatively as they solve problems. Fourth graders utilize the four basic arithmetic operations to solve word problems and gain an understanding of the real-life applications of math.

We know that for many parents, the transition away from counting, single-digit addition, and other elementary topics can be daunting. In fourth grade, your child will begin to apply these foundational skills to higher level thinking tasks. Thus, at this developmental stage, it becomes increasingly difficult for some parents to explain math homework topics. It also is fairly common for students in the latter years of elementary school to become self conscious while their parents are trying to help with math, which can oftentimes create tension in the home.

To get you started on assessing your child's grade-level learning objectives, we have summarized key grade-level standards straight from the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Our goal is to provide you with a simple list of topics your child should have mastered by the end of fourth grade.

Key Learning Objectives for Grade 4:

  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • Utilize the four operations with whole numbers to solve practical problems.

    • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples, while generating and analyzing patterns to enhance logical thinking.

  • Number and Operations in Base Ten

    • Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.

    • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic, building computational fluency.

  • Number and Operations – Fractions

    • Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

    • Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending understanding of operations on whole numbers, crucial for advanced mathematical concepts.

  • Measurement and Data

    • Solve problems involving the measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.

    • Represent and interpret data, and understand concepts of angle and measure angles, applying them in various contexts.

  • Geometry

    • Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles, promoting spatial reasoning and analytical skills.

If your child is struggling to make progress in any of the above mathematical areas, we encourage you to provide intervention early. Middle school is rapidly approaching for our growing fourth graders, and we want to make sure that they start their next academic chapter with strong skills and self confidence.
